Deputy President William Ruto's confession that his famous Nairobi's Weston Hotel sits on an illegally acquired piece of land has caused a stir online.

In an exclusive interview on BBC last week, the DP said he innocently purchased the land without knowing that it had been acquired through fraud.

Local activists are now demanding that the government demolish the multi-million hotel just like it has been the case with other structures built on public land.

Led by Nairobi politician Boniface Mwangi, the activists asked President Uhuru Kenyatta to order the hotel be brought down if he wanted Kenyans to believe he was determined in fighting corruption and impunity in the country.

"The land where the Weston Hotel stands belongs to Kenya Civil Aviation Authority. If Uhuru Kenyatta is not being a hypocrite and if he means business, he should be ready to lose friends, including the DP William Ruto, by demolishing Weston Hotel. As long as the hotel stands, it's a symbol of impunity," tweeted Mwangi, former Starehe parliamentary seat aspirant.

Echoing similar sentiments, city blogger Josiah Adiema Adiema said the DP ought to be punished for 'handling stolen goods'.

"Even people who have handled stolen goods get arrested. So, can William Ruto be arrested for handling illegally acquired property?" Adiema posed.

In his defence, the Jubilee deputy party leader has absolved himself from blame insisting he was doing everything possible to correct the illegality by ensuring the real owner was compensated.

“Reparations are being made constitutionally to restore the land to the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority by demanding that those who sold the land to us must pay,” Ruto said during BBC Hard Talk show.
