The incident happened on Sunday at Nyamare village in Kisii County.

Witnesses said the boy, Isaiah Nyakundi Maeba was playing with his friends at the roadside few meters away from their home when the dog attacked him.

"Maeba was attacked by a dog when he attempted to scare it away. The dog was carrying a bone when it bite him and fled into a nearby bush, abandoning the bone” said Catherine Mabuka.

Mrs Mabuka said passersby rushed the boy to Riana dispensary where he was later referred to Iyabe hospital.

Area chief, Edward Mogaka said residents owning dogs should tie them during the day to avoid unnecessary attacks.

“Members of the public should not allow their dogs to loiter around the village during the day since kids playing may be tempted to scare the dogs away resulting to attacks,” he said.

He said the boy is stable in hospital and responding well to medication.

The administrator said the owner of the dog is yet to be identified and called on members of the public to name the owner so that he or she can pay for the boy's hospital bill.
