A Nakuru chief is on the spot for attacking media fraternity during his speech at a funeral ceremony at Sinendet, Njoro sub-county.
The chief, Simon Kamau Kariuki, who was given a chance to address the public during the ceremony, attacked media saying that journalists have been reporting only bad incidents about the area.
He was referring to an incident in which journalists reported cases of insecurity, lack of water and rampant illicit brew consumption in his area.
“I want the media people to know that we have challenges but also positive stories but you keep on reporting on challenges and when they are addressed you do not highlight on the same,” said Kamau.
However, residents of Sinendet area said the chief is bitter with media for highlighting the issue of rampant illicit brew.
Led by Paul Njoroge, the residents called on Interior CS Fred Matiang’i to intervene.
“As locals of this area, we are not happy with the continued illicit brew business as area chiefs watches. We are calling on Matiang'i to intervene,” said Mr.Njoroge.
Nakuru County Youth Chairman Daniel Kimani called on the County Government Liquor Licensing department to look into the matter and ensure those licensed to operate liquor premises meet the required standards.
“Our youths are dropping out of school because of rampant illicit brew in the area. We are surprised that even some of the local administrators own liquor premises. We, therefore, call on the county government liquor licensing department and administrators to look into the matter,” said Kimani.
