It’s common in a relationship to point out a flaw in your partner or something that you do not like about them. If it’s a mild or trivial thing, he or she may consider changing to make the relationship work.

However, pointing out some flaws amounts to criticism and as you all know, criticism can bring about negative connotations. As such, criticism should be used cautiously, lest you scald your partner or cause a breakup.

Here are five things you should never criticise your partner about.

1. Body

Do not criticise your partner’s body as it is God-given and they can't change it. The criticism will be worse if you met your partner the way they currently are. That can only be interpreted to mean that you never actually loved them and accepted them the way they are.

2. Opinions

The cliché goes that everyone is entitled to their own opinions. There no rules that say your partner’s opinions on matters such as politics must be similar to yours. Your partner may have a particularly strong opinion which you may oppose mightily. The secret is, try not to dwell on them. Not especially through criticism.

3. Things they cannot change

There are things that one cannot change. Like family members for example. For starters, they were there before you and your partner even met. Their bad habits are their habits, not your partners.

4. Feelings

Your partner’s feelings may be so complex that you may find it hard to understand. Sometimes you wonder why your partner is acting the way they are or reacting in a manner that you find hard to understand. Do not criticize them, try to understand them.

5. Aspirations

There are things that your partner longs to achieve on an individual level, rather than as both of you are as a couple. Instead of criticising these aspirations, support them and offer advice if you can. Be your partner’s number one cheerleader.
