It is the beginning of a brand new month, August.
A month in Kenya that many especially those in the political circles love to hate due to the historical 'misfortunes' associated with it.
However, this is a topic for another day. The focus here is on the kind of people you are likely to meet in Thika town during various stages of the month.
1. Spenders: These are found all over the town between date 1 and 9. They are mostly salaried people who get paid at the end of the month. They could also be village farmers coming for their monthly tea, coffee or milk payments.
They are mostly in town courtesy of their heavy pockets doing all types of shopping, drinking themselves silly, eating 'nyama choma' among other things that require cash. They disappear into thin air as soon as their pockets dry up.
2. Debtors: These ones you will find them in the town between date 11 and 19. You might mistake them for job seekers as they jump from one financial institution to the other carrying envelopes as they try to secure loans and advances. They are usually as broke as a church mouse and can't even afford to buy you a cup of tea.
3. Shylocks: These ones are usually found in the town streets between date 20 and 27 when they are sure to make a kill. You will find them going around advertising their services in vans.
And since many people are still broke, they will fall for these Shylocks who are willing to extend small loans at huge interests to the more than willing broke residents. They will, however, have strict conditions like the loan must be paid at the end of the month.
4. Police, Thugs and Prostitutes: These three groups storm the streets towards end month to simply harvest where they did not sow. They know those with salaries are loaded and those without may have taken small 'loans' from salaried friends.
Police will arrest you on the slightest available opportunity after which you must part with 'good cash'. Prostitutes will 'sell' to you their 'flesh' and steal from you if possible. Thugs, on the other hand, will knock you hard to drop whatever thing of value you could be carrying with you.
