Unknown to most people, this process of 'self-satisfaction' not only affects mental and physical health but also one’s social life. It also affects both men and women in equal measure.

Some ladies from Moi University revealed the serious effects of masturbation for both men and women, some of which they have witnessed among their friends at the Kesses-based institution.

“It is undeniable that the urge of engaging in masturbation is quite irresistible especially because of the peer pressure. But I think the youths should abstain because of the impact it will have on their health for instance insomnia, muscle weakness, fatigue, body aches and pains. I was privileged to be part of a campaign against masturbation several years back and that is how I learnt of such effects. Masturbation can also result in infections for those who use lotions and other chemicals,” Irene Omondi, a third-year student pursuing a degree course in Psychology explained.

Ruth Nanjala, a second-year student in the School of Arts, on the other hand, seems to be more worried about the effect that it will have on one’s social life.

“People who are addicted to masturbation often opt to distance themselves from people of the opposite sex because of reduced self-esteem. Some of them may even end up being introverts. As such, their social life is adversely affected,” Nanjala noted.

Belinda Nyaboke, a fourth-year student in the School of Education on her part digs a little bit deeper to reveal the effect of masturbation on one’s reproduction health in men.

“Frequent masturbation reduces the level of sperms. People who are addicted to masturbating may do it several times within a day. This, therefore, puts the reproductive system under pressure to produce more sperms. So for one to have a healthy reproductive system, they should abstain from it,” Nyaboke advised.

Apart from having its own negative effects, masturbation is also discouraged by society and considered immoral. Teenagers and youths, in general, are therefore advised to abstain from masturbation.
