By the time of his death January 2015, the late Fidel Odinga was on the right track as far as Luo traditions are concerned.
While most young Luo men opt to build simple houses as their simba (a young man's hut), Fidel went for a palatial house.
The house is located at the entrance of his father and opposition leader Raila Odinga's rural home in Opoda Farm in Bondo, Siaya county.
The mysterious thing about the house is that Fidel seemed to avoid it and never at any point slept inside until his death.
He died a month after his expected first nap inside the house, as he was scheduled to use the house during the 2014 festive seasons but did not.
His younger brother, Raila Odinga Junior, who is Raila's only surviving son too never slept at home.
Instead, he opted to use a hotel room as he couldn't sleep inside the main house, his father's house, as per the Luo customs.
The latter was yet to build his own house at the time.
Therefore, the house will remain unoccupied throughout its existence until a day comes when it collapses or is destroyed.
Because of this, Fidel could not be buried at the same compound, leading to his burial at the family cemetery in Kang'o Ka Jaramogi.
Kang'o Ka Jaramogi is the home to his grandfather and founding Vice President Jaramogi Oginga Odinga.
The departed veteran politician and opposition figure died at the Aga Khan Hospital in Kisumu in 1994.
Some belongings of Fidel were however retrieved from the house as relatives and friends planned for his burial.
He was laid to rest on Saturday, January 10, in a heavily attended function that attracted Raila's allies and rivals in the political arena.
