The town is however mainly inhabited by the Nandi, Tugen, Keiyo and Kipsigis which are some of the sub-tribes of the Kalenjin community.

For this reason, Kalenjin is the main language being used within the town.

Here is a list of words you should master before visiting the town;

Chamgei: It is a Kalenjin word for greetings. It is replied with 'Achamegei' or 'Chamgei missing'.

Mwao: This word means tell me something or what you want whenever you enter a shop or a hotel. You should reply by mentioning whatever you want.

Weri: This word is used by men who are about the same age or are in the same age set. Most men in the town use this word to call or refer to each other.

Lakwet: It originally means a child but it is mostly used to refer to young and beautiful ladies.

Kass amwoun: This means to listen to me carefully. Someone will tell you this word when he is giving you instructions.

Wiru kiy: This word is mostly used by beggars or ‘wannabes‘. Someone will tell you this when he wants you to give him/her money.

Chepkondok: It is the most important thing in town. Chepkondok simply means money.

Ingebe: It simply means let us go.

Imoche ne: It is a question to ask what you want.

Berber: It means stupid. If someone tells you this, then he is suggesting that you are stupid.

Those are the basic Kalenjin words you are likely to hear while in Eldoret. Don't hesitate to use any of it while you're in the 'Home of Champions."
