Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) chairman George Magoha has noted with concern that the university system in the country has been politicized.
Magoha said the competition for every locality to have a university has led to the creation of lots of institutions that don't offer quality education.
He attributed this to the urge to create job opportunities for people from the regions, notwithstanding the quality of education that will be provided.
"We have created universities in our localities and markets because we feel they are going to provide employment to our people, shame on us," Magoha said.
He spoke during the Machakos University's third graduation ceremony on Friday.
Magoha said most of the universities in the country lack tangible physical infrastructure and academic faculty.
He said due to this, there are many half-baked graduates in the country.
"You will find someone calling himself a professor yet he can't say he is a professor of what and his name is not in Google, he can't carry original research," he said.
Magoha said we will have a country full of graduates who cannot practice what they claim to be if this continues in the future.
