A section of Nyamira County residents have claimed that Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i is the reason public service vehicles (PSVs) have hiked bus fare.
Led by Daniel Mosoti, the locals argued that since Matiang'i forced the introduction of 'Michuki rules', which informed matatu operators to hike bus fare.
"PSVs hiked fares on grounds that Matiang'i has imposed tough rules. For instance we are being charged Sh150 from Nyamira to Kisii yet we used to pay Sh80. Matiang'i should intervene since we are being robbed indirectly," said Mosoti.
Ann Ratemo protested hiked bus fare saying the 'Michuki rules' has turned to be burden to poor residents in Nyamira County.
"I have never gone to Daraja Mbili market in Kisii County to sell my ripe bananas since Matiang'i introduced the new road rules. I can't afford to pay Sh150 to Kisii and vice versa. The government through Matiang'is office should apprehend matatu operators overcharging us," she pleaded.
Linus Manoti accused PSVs for failing to lower bus fare even after Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) reduced fuel prices.
"We are spending too much on transport unlike when buying food. PSVs must be compelled to reduce bus fare," noted Manoti.
