According to the area Nyumba Kumi chairman Joseph Onkundi Okangi, the infant was dumped in the toilet by a 25-year-old woman who gave birth while at her grandmother's home.

"The woman came to visit her grandmother only for the old granny to help her dump the infant in the toilet immediately after delivering the baby," said the chairman.

Onkundi, a neighbour who went to the toilet heard the infant crying and raised alarm.

"Locals responded quickly to the alarm raised by one of the neighbours and managed to rescue the infant alive from the toilet. The infant was rushed to Nyamira County Referral Hospital for treatment," he said.

He assured that the infant is responding well to medication.

"The woman and her grandmother have since gone into hiding in fear of arrest. We will not rest until we have them arrested to face the full force of the law," he stated.

Okangi warned women against giving birth and dumping the infants in pit latrines.
