Over 500 families in Bondeni slums on the outskirts of Eldoret town will be spending their night in the cold after they were evicted from a disputed land they have been living in.
Property worth over Sh10 million were also destroyed during the eviction exercise on Tuesday.
According to Agnes Wangechi who spoke on behalf of the affected families, the eviction was done by a private developer whom they accuse of plotting to evict them so as to easily grab the land.
“We have stayed on this piece of land for more than 30 years and we were in the process of acquiring title deeds. We have a right to stay here,” said Wangechi.
The families also said they were never informed about the impending eviction. Bulldozers believed to be from the County Government of Uasin Gishu were deployed to demolish houses at the land.
They urged relevant county and national government agencies to come to their rescue.
“We were just ambushed by the bulldozers which started flattening our houses. We had no time to salvage any of our property," added Wangechi.
David Songok who said he owns the disputed land defended eviction of the families saying they had settled on the property illegally.
“I bought this land a decade ago and I have all the legal documents. Some of the people who settled on the property were compensated by the government a long time ago but still continue to hang around for unknown reasons," Songok said.
