Speaking from his parliamentary office, Duale warned that Parliament could not purport to vet an individual facing serious economic crimes charges.

"Parliament cannot purport to approve an individual who is facing economic crimes before a competent court and more so before an anti-corruption court," Duale said.

Mr Chumo faces charges of corruption in a court of law over the loss of public funds, charges he rebuffed while appearing before the vetting committee.

His name was submitted by President Uhuru Kenyatta for vetting.

The Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Hajji implicated Mr Chumo just days after his nomination by the president.

It would be interesting to see what impact the charges will have on the vetting.
