According to Shollei, passing the bill will help increase the number of women elected to Parliament.

“The bill will address the two-thirds gender rule through electing more women as opposed to nominations where political party’s officials usually nominate their girlfriends. This will be a thing of the past if the bill is passed,” said Shollei in Eldoret town, Monday.

“The difference between the leader of majority Aden Duale's Bill and my bill is that I propose increasing the number of women to parliament who have been tested and vetted by the public through an election instead of direct nomination,” she added.

The Women Rep. reiterated that the bill will also ensure that there are enough women in the county assemblies to meet the one third gender threshold unlike currently where a majority of the elected Ward Representative seats are held by men forcing the county assemblies to nominate more women to meet the requirements of the law.

Shollei further said the bill also proposes pairing of some constituencies into one that will be reserved solely for women alongside existing constituencies that will be contested for by both genders.
