Kisii County Commissioner Godfrey Kigochi has fired warning shots at rogue land brokers in the county.
The commissioner regretted that cases of people being conned of their land have increased.
"Some people have been pretending to be officers at the office of lands to con others of their land. I want to affirm that land brokers must keep off and venture into legal dealings before the law catches up with them," he said.
While condemning an incident at Omweri village in Keumbu on Thursday where a 70-year-old woman was chased from her matrimonial home because of land inheritance issues, Kogichi insisted that any conman found will be sent to jail to serve as an example.
"Members of the public must be on high alert and report to police anyone they suspect is impersonating an officer from the lands office with an intention of grabbing land for legal actions to be taken without delay," he stated.
He further warned elders in the villages of taking bribes to solve land-related cases at the local level without involving police or local chiefs.
"Chiefs should not sleep to allow innocent people being conned their land. The administrators must know they are the government's watchdogs and must ensure dubious dealings are not condoned," said the commissioner.
