Eldoret town, the capital of Uasin Gishu County is popularly referred to as the home of champions. This is due to the fact that the town is home to several athletes who have flown Kenya flags in the international arena.

It is not necessarily that all of the athletes come from the town, but many of them live here, and this is why it has been branded the home of champions.

Here are 7 people that have made Eldoret 'the home of champions';

Ezekiel Kemboi

He is a two time Olympic and four-time World Champion in the 3,000 metres steeplechase. He is a popular athlete among Kenyans due to his style of running. 

Asbel Kiprop

He is a three times World 1500M Champion and 2008 Olympic Champion.

Vivian Cheruiyot

She was born in the neighbouring Elgeyo Marakwet county in Keiyo but has made Eldoret her home. Vivian is a long-distance runner who specialised in track and cross country running. She is an Olympic champion in 5000M and was recently crowned the London Marathon champion.

Ednah Kiplagat

The 2011 and 2013 IAAF World Champion in the marathon was born and raised in Uasin Gishu county. She established herself as an elite marathon runner with wins at the Los Angeles and New York City Marathons in 2010.

Julius Yego

He was born in Nandi county but has made Eldoret his home. Yego, the World Javelin champion is nicknamed 'Mr YouTube' because he learned how to throw by watching YouTube videos of javelin athletes.

Kipchoge Keino

Keino is a legend in the Kenyan athletes. During his time, be brought many athletic titles in the country including gold in 1968 summer Olympics in 5,000 metres. His contribution to the growth of athletics has earned him the legendary title. Keino was born in Nandi county but has several investments in Uasin Gishu among them Keino school and has a stadium in Eldoret town named after him.
