The CS was linked to the saga after his name was invoked in a leaked phone conversation between a man believed to be a local senior politician and a Dubai-based gold dealer.

In the audio which has gone viral since its release on Friday, Matiang'i is alleged to have received instructions from President Uhuru Kenyatta to order the release of a gold consignment purportedly confiscated at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

Asked by Sunday Nation to comment on the leaked audio which has caused a political storm in the country, Matiang'i said:  “You don’t expect me to respond to whether fraudsters mentioned my name in what is an active investigation.”

Politicians allied to Deputy President William Ruto have been piling pressure on the CS to explain what he knows about the scandal which has reportedly caused a diplomatic hiccup between Kenya and Dubai.

Led by Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa, the leaders have threatened to summon the CS before the National Assembly Security Committee to explain his position.

“If he (CS Matiang’i) fails to tell the Committee what he knows about the gold scam then he does not deserve to be in charge of the internal security docket,” Jumwa said during a function in Trans Nzoia, Saturday.

However, controversial gold dealer Zaheer Meriahi Jhanda, who is at the centre of the deal, has delinked Matiang'i from the scandal.

In an exclusive interview with Sunday Standard, Zaheer claimed four MPs from Rift Valley had begged him to implicate the CS alongside former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, a request he trashed.
