According to Kalonzo, he was prepared to contest for the presidency in 1997 but Moi could not hear about it.

He records that Moi looked straight into his face and told him not to waste time seeking support from Kamba and Kalenjin elders because he had already decided to support the incumbent President Uhuru Kenyatta for the same position.

“You know Stephen, I have been thinking over this issue. Don’t bother bringing Mzee Mulu Mutisya and Kamba elders to meet Kalenjin elders, because the Kalenjin elders have decided to support Uhuru Kenyatta,” recalled Kalonzo.

Kalonzo further reveals that he was heartbroken to the point that he did not have the courage to respond to the head of state at that time.

“I was heart-broken and I did not respond. He told me to go and brief Mulu about his decision,” he notes.

Kalonzo’s attempts to become president have not borne fruits yet.

He has hinted at contesting for the post come 2022.

The chances of his success, however, remain minimal considering the current situation in the opposition.
