Most girls from North Eastern region do not make it to universities because of marriage.

Is there a story unfolding in your community? Let Hivisasa know

When most of these girls finish their secondary school studies, they are married off to rich and wealthy men who are either living within the region or they are from abroad.

Every girl in school will be willing to finish the secondary studies to start a lavish life so that she becomes a wife and a mother later on.

When you meet most of these girls, they will tell you that after all, when you finish your studies and get a job, you will get married and the earlier the better. The worst thing is that most of them start the preparation for their weddings even before they are done with the O level studies.

A great percentage of these girls aim at marrying men from abroad since they can maintain their needs and satisfy them financially. It happens that most girls in North Eastern region do not concentrate in class because they are busy with their phones chatting in various social media platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram or Snapchat.

When a teacher in class tries to reach to the particular student and tries to take her phone, the student angrily confronts him/her saying that she is busy chatting with her future husband. This leads to these girls failing in national examinations and ending up marrying the 'said future husband'.

This is a trend that is spreading almost in all schools in North Eastern region and if not stopped as soon as possible, there could be no more girls from the region joining universities or even high schools.

I would like to call upon all leaders and stakeholders from the region to do something about this growing trend to save the girl child and save the future of women and girls generation in the North Eastern region.
