A section of traders at Riosiri market in South Mugirango constituency has vowed to stop paying taxes to Kisii County government over what they claim is the poor state of the market and insecurity.
The traders led by their secretary James Miruka while speaking on Monday during an interview at the market accused Kisii county boss James Ongwae of ignoring them.
"Insecurity is at the peak in the market due to lack of street lights. Traders are losing their valuable to criminals who take advantage of the darkness to steal," said Miruka.
The disappointed traders' leader argued that they will only resume paying taxes once street lights are installed and proper drainage done.
Another trader Dorothy Moraa said customers have kept off the market because it is impassable.
"We will not pay tax to Ongwae's government until the state of the market is improved. The market has become impassable. It's muddy and slippery all over. Ongwae's administration must use the tax we have been paying to improve the drainage patterns in the market," said Moraa.
Terry Kerubo, another trader protested Ongwae's sluggishness to fulfil the campaign promises.
According to Kerubo, the county promised to upgrade the market but, he has done nothing after he won the 2017 polls.
