A man in Bungoma County is reported to have escaped into neighbouring Uganda after allegedly murdering a widow whom he recently inherited after the death of her husband.
According to witnesses, the man who has only been identified as Geoffrey, killed Hellen Namalwa at their home in Mayanja sub-location in Bumula, accusing her of infidelity.
The incident happened on Tuesday, moments after a neighbour visited their home, after which the man accused the deceased of cheating with the man and hacked her with a jembe before tying her body to the bed with a leso.
The man who is originally from Lwandanyi area in Sirisia stabbed the deceased on the neck and thigh with a kitchen knife, only a year after his release from prison over similar changes.
Confirming the incident, the clan chairman Geoffrey Wekesa Maungu said that attempts to chase the man way were futile.
This, he said, is despite the fact that he did not have any identification cards which made it hard to establish where he came from.
He said that the woman threatened to kill herself if the accused, who is aged 46, was sent away.
‘’We decided to let them live together since he was assisting her in small shamba chores and looking after the family animals,’’ he said.
Villagers said that they saw the accused leaving the home after the incident, claiming that he lied to them that the woman had sent him to the market.
The body was moved to the Bungoma Referral Hospital mortuary.
