Swazuri who was nabbed early in the morning was arrested with other officials who included NLC director Salome Munubi who is in charge of valuation and taxation, Francis Mugo in charge of finance, Gladys Mwikali Muyanga who is a land registrar in the Lands Ministry as well as licenced land surveyor Obadiah Mbugua Wainaina.

Police also arrested the commission's chief executive and secretary Chavangi Aziz Tom and Kenya Railways Managing Director Atanas Maina.

They were detained after Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji approved their arrest.

Haji's office on Saturday tweeted saying it had ordered for Swazuri's arrest overcompensation of land that was allocated for the SGR project.

"The DPP has consented to charges against National Land Commission (NLC) Chair Dr Swazuri and others in relation to SGR compensation," the tweet said.

There are still no details of specific charges that police will prefer against Swazuri and the other officials arrested.

A family recently petitioned the EACC over the acquisition of a piece of land for the SGR project located in Miritini Mombasa.
