Kenyans today woke up to the sad news of the death of renowned activist and author Binyavanga Wainaina.

The family of the activist, who was known for his controversial stand on gay matters, confirmed his death. 

Following the announcement, Binyavanga's fans took to social media to send their condolence messages. 

Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris eulogized the late Binyavanga as a man who dedicated his life to fight for the oppressed in society.

She said his death is a big blow to the nation, adding that he stood up for everyone before his death.

“My condolences to the family and friends of acclaimed writer and activist @BinyavangaW who passed away after a short illness. Binyavanga won the 2003 Caine Prize for his book, 'Discovering Home' and challenged us to question stereotypes about gender and identity,” she said in a tweet.

Wainaina, who became very popular after he wrote 'Discovering Home', died aged 48.

Prior to his death, he was very vocal on matters affecting gay people in the society.
