Though the truce between President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga was meant to bring Kenyans together, it appears to be a political move to block Deputy President William Ruto’s State House ambitions.
If the latter is true, then, it will be a headache for DP Ruto to sit on the big seat in 2022.
However, Ruto will have two major weapons to use against the two political enigmas.
1. Sympathy
President Kenyatta and Raila are political dynasties who enjoy a large support base from different parts of the country. If Ruto will vie for the presidency against them in 2022 politics, sympathy would play a major role. He must be seen as a "commoner" who is just a hustler just like any other citizen who is in political war with the rich dynasties.
Ruto has been narrating stories on his struggles as a mere chicken seller who first wanted to be a train driver. Just like in 2013 elections and the ICC case when sympathy played a major role, this is meant to make Kenyans empathize with him as he eyes 2022.
2. Narratives
Another weapon that Ruto is using is creating narratives on some of the highly debated subjects across the country. He has capitalised on the power of the media and in public forums to give traction to narratives such as the fight against graft, church fundraisers among others.
Propaganda is also playing a major role in narratives as Ruto’s supporters are meant to believe that the fight is targeted at ‘our person’.
