Kipchoge, named as the best marathoner ever, crossed the line after 2.01.40 to smash the record that was being held by another Kenyan Dennis Kimeto (2.02.57).

Kimeto had set the record at the same course in 2014.

The 33-year-old Kimeto has now won 9 out of 10 marathons he has participated in with Kimeto being the only one to beat him in 2014 on his way to setting the record that was broken today.

Kenya swept the podium with Amos Kipruto finishing second (2.06.20) while 2013 Berlin Marathon champion Wilson Kipsang finished third after clocking 2.06.47.
