The maternity hospital that serves city dwellers including those in Kibera has been hit with negative publicity.

Last month, Pumwani was in the news over alleged deaths of 12 infants whose bodies were found stuffed in boxes.

The maternity hospital has also been hit with claims of baby swapping, baby theft and child trafficking.

But here are other facts you didn’t know about the Pumwani maternity hospital.

1. It is the largest maternity hospital in East and Central Africa.

2. It was founded in 1926 by a charitable organisation called Lady Grigg Welfare League. 

3. It was renamed Lady Grigg maternity in 1928. 

4. In 1944 it was named ‘Pumwani Maternity' and was acquired by the Nairobi Municipality. 

5. Prominent people among them former Nairobi governor Evans Kidero were born at Pumwani.
