Water shortage that has been a regular problem to locals in Eldoret town will soon be a thing of the past after the county government of Uasin Gishu officially handed over the Kipkaren water dam that will be used to set up a water supply.
Speaking to the press at the county headquarters in Eldoret after the exercise on Tuesday, Uasin Gishu governor Jackson Mandago said the project will cost Sh1.3 billion which is a loan from the National Government.
The loan will be paid by the Eldoret Water and Sanitation Company (ELDOWAS).
Once complete, the project will supply 23,000 cubic metres of water daily, significantly reducing a deficit that has been the cause of water rationing and shortage in Eldoret
Currently the town has a deficit of 24,000 cubic meters of water.
“The project has a potential of expansion to serve this county for another additional 10 years from 2027 with a capacity increase of another 17,000 cubic meters,” said Mandago.
Mandago also noted that availability of sufficient water supply within the county’s capital will be a key enabler to the national government’s Big Four Agenda on housing with 2,000 housing units expected to be built in the town.
The project is expected to be completed within two and a half years.
Muchiri Limited, a local contractor won the tender for the project.
