North Eastern counties will be among 23 counties that will be affected by the nurses’ strike which will start next week on Monday.
Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, and Marsabit counties will be the most affected by the nurses’ strike as most residents travel long distances seeking medical services.
Other counties include Kwale, Kirinyaga, Embu, Nyandarua, Kiambu, Kisumu, Kisii, Nyeri, Samburu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Trans Nzoia, Tharaka Nithi, West Pokot, Nairobi, Kitui, Homa Bay, Murang'a and Taita Taveta.
The Kenya National Union of Nurses (Knun) has vowed that nurses will go on strike over government’s failure to fully implement a return-to-work formula that was agreed.
Knun General-Secretary Seth Panyako said the government has failed to implement a negotiated agreement entered on November 2, 2017 for service and uniform allowances.
Mr Panyako accused the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) of frustrating the implementation of the agreement between the two levels of government and the union.
He claimed that SRC was placing preconditions that must be met even after various county governments had committed to pay the money.
“We want to report that the agreement has not been fully implemented by the two levels of government. We find these games played by SRC as political gimmicks meant to sabotage President Uhuru Kenyatta's Big Four Agenda and as a union we shall not accept,” said Mr Panyako as quoted by nation.co.ke.
The secretary general, however, said that the remaining 20 other counties will not be affected by the strike after they pledged to pay the allowances adding that Mombasa, Machakos and Migori honoured and implemented the agreement fully.
