Eldoret town residents have reacted to President Uhuru Kenyatta's mini cabinet reshuffle that led to the sacking of Sports Cabinet Secretary (CS) Rashid Echesa.
In an Executive Order issued by President Kenyatta today (Friday), Echesa will be replaced with Education CS Amina Mohammed.
"In accordance with Article 152(5) of the Constitution, as read together with Article 152(1)(d) of the Constitution, the appointment of Mr Rashid Echesa Mohamed, as a Cabinet Secretary has been vacated," read the order.
Former University of Nairobi vice chancellor and chairman of the Kenya National Examination Council (Knec) Prof George Magoha has been nominated as the new Education CS.
A section of residents in Eldoret has lauded the move, arguing that the nomination of Magoha as Education CS is a step in the right direction.
"This is the best news to start the month. The appointment of Magoha will boost the education sector which was deteriorating under Amina's leadership," said Tarus, a businessman in the town.
"President Uhuru saw Amina as a joker, she can now go play in the field," said Lawi, a resident, adding that Echesa's sacking was looming as he was more of a politician than a CS.
On her part, Mary Koshei reiterated Tarus' sentiments, arguing that Magoha will bring reforms in the education sector.
"Magoha will really steer the Education Ministry. He is a no-nonsense leader just like Matiang'i," said Koshei.
"You can not threaten to arrest many jobless Kenyans due to failure to repay their Helb loans and expect to stay. She can now go and arrest gambling defaulters," she added.
