Kisumu Governor Anyang' Nyong’o on Thursday highlighted some of the key progress made in the county one year after being sworn in.
In a state of the county address titled “There is work to be done: let’s do it,” the governor said his administration had made tremendous progress in realizing the ten-point-manifesto he had when he took office one year ago.
Among ten points are; ensuring a healthy population living in a clean environment, building modern physical infrastructure, promoting skills development and innovation, opening the Kisumu lakefront for business and investment, providing decent housing in inclusive towns, semi-urban areas and villages, and promoting sports, culture and the arts.
According to the Governor, much progress has been realized in the health sector. Last month, the county government in partnership with the national government launched the Universal Health Coverage initiative as one of the four counties selected to implement the pilot face of the initiative.
“Our agenda for health services delivery follows through the lives of our people, from birth to old age,” he said.
Nyong'o noted that Kisumu had improved in the sanitation sector citing a survey that ranked Kisumu as the cleanest town in Kenya, and the relocation of of the infamous Kachok dumpsite.
“Our young people are engaged by the city management in cleaning the streets and the estates. That is how Kisumu City has risen to become the cleanest city in the country. Up to 300 young people have been engaged in temporary employment,” said Governor Nyong’o.
“We have completed the first phase of relocation of the infamous Kachok dumpsite, in which 125,000 tonnes of waste on two and a half acres of the dumpsite has been evacuated in 5,000 trips,” he added.
It was the first State of Kisumu County address since the governor was elected last year.
