A Ward Representative in Uasin Gishu county has expressed his support for the ongoing calls for a constitutional change through a referendum.
The Racecourse MCA has, however, said the referendum should focus on addressing the ballooning wage bill in the country.
Speaking in Eldoret town on Wednesday, Kiptanui said one of the things the referendum should focus on is reducing the number of Members of Parliament.
“I propose that we reduce the number of Members of Parliament by merging constituencies. For instance, in Uasin Gishu we should go back to the old system where we had 3 constituencies that is Eldoret North, East, and South,” said the MCA.
“I also propose that the nominated MPs, Senators and MCAs should be scrapped since the elected leaders represent all people, therefore, no need for the nominated ones,” he added.
The Ward Rep., however, said that devolved units should not be touched whatsoever pointing out that MCAs have a lot of work meeting with the electorates on daily basis and solving their problems.
“Governor, MCAs and county governments should not be touched during the referendum whatsoever, they should just remain the way they are,” he insisted.
