Kalonzo was Moi’s trusted ally and confidant, he would accompany the former president to every political event.

He served as Foreign Affairs Minister in Moi’s government between 1993 and 1998.

Before he was handed the Foreign Affairs docket, Kalonzo had served as Public Works Assistant Minister.

In the run-up to the 1997 general election, Moi appointed Kalonzo as KANU's Organizing Secretary as he cemented his relationship with the former Mwingi MP.

The duo's political friendship blossomed until when the 2002 succession politics began to play out.

Kalonzo had thought that Moi would endorse him for the presidency in 2002.

The former Vice President was, however, shocked to learn that Moi had picked Uhuru Kenyatta as his successor.

The move angered Kalonzo and other politicians among them Raila Odinga who quit KANU.

Kalonzo and other veteran politicians later led massive walk-out from KANU and formed NARC.

NARC then endorsed retired president Mwai Kibaki as its presidential candidate.

Kibaki contested against Uhuru and won the election that ended Moi’s 24-year rule.

Kalonzo, Raila and Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu among other politicians were later named as Ministers in Kibaki’s government.
