A court in Mombasa has sentenced a Tanzanian national to 20 years in prison after he was found guilty of trafficking narcotic drugs.
While issuing the ruling, Senior Principal Magistrate Francis Kyiambia found Haruna Bakari Juya guilty of trafficking 2.975 kg of heroine worth Sh8,925,000.
The magistrate said drug menace in the Coast region had affected youth and that the heroin could have caused more damage if it could have reached the market.
Bakari Juya who was arrested in February 18, 2015 at the Lungalunga customs baggage Hall, in Msambweni, Kwale County was also fined Sh8 million or serve additional four years in jail.
The suspect has been in remand for three years.
"The Court has considered the mitigation of the accused person and the prosecution has also said that the accused person should be treated as a first time offender. He will serve sentence and pay a fine, failure to pay fine he will serve another four years; the sentence will run concurrently," said the magistrate on Tuesday.
