Grief engulfed Itibo village in Kitutu Chache South Constituency, Kisii County after a 68-year-old woman died following an attack by four armed thugs.
According to area chief Charles Nyaoso, the deceased, Elmelda Ongoncho, met her death after she returned home from Nairobi where she works to attend the burial of one of her sons.
"On Tuesday night four armed thugs armed with crude weapons stormed Elmelda's house and demanded the money she got after selling a piece of land. When she refused to give them the money, the thugs hacked her several times using a panga," said the chief.
The administrator said neighbours who heard the commotion in the deceased's house rushed to the homestead only to find Emelda lying in a pool of blood.
He said the thugs escaped through the backdoor leaving the woman for dead.
"Neighbours took Emelda to the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital where she died while receiving treatment," he noted.
Nyaoso assured residents that police have launched investigations into the incident, adding that the culprits will be brought to book.
He further warned youths against engaging in crime.
The body of the deceased was moved to the hospital's morgue.
