The proposal by the national and county governments to hire nurses on a contract basis has continued to elicit mixed reactions across the country.
The Central Organisation of Trade Unions (Cotu) Secretary-General Francis Atwoli has termed the proposal as ill-timed and ill-driven.
Speaking during a press conference held at a Naivasha hotel on Tuesday, Atwoli said the government oughts to think twice before initiating the move since it is likely to discourage nurses from looking for jobs.
He insisted that no government in the world hires nurses on contract basis. He urged the government to address issues facing nurses and not frustrate them.
“Which government in the world talks about casualization of labour?” he asked, as quoted by the Nation.
Atwoli, who has been very vocal on matters of national interest, said that universities are producing thousands of graduates and it would be unfair for the governments to implement the proposal.
Health Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki and Council of Governors Chairman Wycliffe Oparanya have hinted at hiring nurses on a contract basis after the medical practitioners insisted on not to return to work despite President Uhuru Kenyatta’s directive.
Atwoli argued that the direction the government is taking is very risky as far as the job market is concerned.
