Police officers who were cracking down on illicit brew were forced to flee for safety after bees chased them from a house where they were conducting a search on Monday morning at Birongo area in Kisii County.

Locals said 6 officers arrived at the home of Nicholas Onsombi and ordered everyone out of the house to conduct a search.

"It was 11 am when I saw a police land cruiser parked at Onsombi's gate. I went to check on what the officers were doing. 10 minutes later 6 officers came out of the house running after they were attacked with bees from inside the house," said Francis Ondigi.

Mr Ondigi said the bees chased the officers who fled and abandoned their vehicle. 

Onsombi, who is the owner of the homestead accused his neighbor of lying to police that he is making illicit brews in his house.

"I am a Christian and I don't engage in illegal businesses. I only keep bees which the officers disturbed in the house while conducting a search," he said. 

Area chief, Joseph Manoti said the officers came from Kegati and he was not they were in the area searching illicit brew. 

The chief, however, said the war on illicit brew must continue.
