Kenyans have a reason to smile and celebrate the Christmas festive season after a long year which was characterised by political uncertainty after the 2017 general election.
Disastrous events which included multiple road carnage and riots also claimed a number of lives. Even as we remain optimistic to welcome the year 2019, below are the five events that brought the whole nation to a standstill in 2018.
1. Raila Odinga's 'swearing-in '
The 'mock' swearing-in of opposition leader, Raila Odinga, was one of the most anticipated events in Kenya despite previous postponement by the coalition leadership.
The opposition chief took the controversial oath at Uhuru Park Grounds in Nairobi on 30th January 2018 in a ceremony skipped by his co-principals Kalonzo Musyoka, Musalia Mudavadi and Moses Wetangula.
The oath was administered by Ruaraka MP TJ Kajwang and controversial lawyer Miguna Miguna.
2. Miguna Miguna Deportation
Mr.Miguna's trouble came after he administered the 'mock' oath to Raila Odinga as the people's president. The self-declared of National Resistance Movement caused drama at JKIA for almost a week during his deportation by state agencies to Canada. The State argued that Miguna's passport was illegally issued in 2009.
3. Uhuru-Raila handshake
President Uhuru Kenyatta and opposition leader 'deal' to end their prolonged political feuds was marked on March 9, 2018 when the two leaders met at Harambee House. The famous handshake left opposition in limbo as it changed the political landscape in the country. Many argue that since the two leaders struck a deal to work together, the role of the opposition in keeping the government in check has significantly waned.
4.Patel dam tragedy
On May 11 2018, kenyans woke in shock after Solai dam burst killing over 47 people and leaving estimated 2,000 residents displaced.
