Many parents are living in fear for their children in institutions of higher learning.

Although Migori governor Okoth Obado is in custody as a suspect in the murder of Sharon Otieno, university students in Eldoret have demanded quick justice.

According to the students, this will act as a lesson to those who think they can walk free after ending the life of a comrade.

“It is late for Sharon Otieno. We cannot undo what has been done. But it is not late for the university students walking around on campuses. What happened to Sharon Otieno should be a wake-up call for the government to offer protection to university students,” Bernard Ochieng' a student at the University of Eldoret stated.

Although the students should also be partially accountable for their own security, the respective institutions should also put in place supportive measures.

“Students at Moi University are at the highest risk of insecurity. There are no restrictions as who enters the school, therefore, posing a threat to the students. Non-students can even access the hostels. The school should, therefore, restrict who enters the school especially hostels,” Dan Mutisya, a second-year student commented.

Female students suffer a higher risk than their male colleagues. Moi University specifically has experienced cases of students being raped and sometimes murdered.

“The administration should boost security at the ladies’ hostel. Rape cases are on the rise. And looking at what happened to Sharon Otieno, who knows what may happen next,” Knight Chelegat a student at Moi University noted.

The demand is one and the same; increased security for students. The students have also been advised to be careful about who they associate themselves with.
