Siaya County Commissioner Michael Ole Tialal confirmed that the body of  Derrick Auka, who was a student at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology in Bondo, was recovered on Tuesday evening, 100 metres from the scene of the incident.

“One body has been recovered 100 metres from the scene of the accident. I have just come from there, so the divers are still looking for second body of the lady,” said Ole Tialal.

He said the body was moved to the Bondo Hospital morgue, as the search for second body intensifies.

Auka and his friend Sharon Atieno died after drowning in River Yala on Saturday as they were allegedly taking selfies.

The late Sharon was a student at the Bondo Technical Training Institute.

She reportedly slipped and fell into the river; prompting Auka to dive into the river in a bid to save her but was overwhelmed by the raging water.

Family members, friends and members of the public have been camping at the Got Winyo bridge since the incident occurred on Saturday.
