Not a lot is said about this part of Kisumu, despite it being the first image of Kisumu County and the closest part of Luo Nyanza from Nairobi.

Kano Plains as is called, ironically remains among the least known part of Kenya despite falling under the popular Kisumu county.

One of the things that make this region unknown is its inability to produce top politicians, most only hailing from other parts of the county.

While opposition leader Raila Odinga has made Siaya county popular and Migori Governor Okoth Obado controversially made his region famous, Kano politicians remain silent.

A son of the region, lawyer Miguna Miguna was on the verge of bringing some fame before he was deported to Canada early last year.

The latter is from Kanyilum Village in Apondo, Nyando constituency.

Also, it has its bad characteristics which further deny it the popularity, the leading one being its topography, specifically the clay soil which makes it very muddy during the rainy season.

As a native of the region, I can attest to the fact that people are forced to build mud houses to avoid huge losses when floods come calling during the rainy season.

This is usually as a result of the great River Nyando, which empties its water Into Lake Victoria, breaking its banks and contributing to water-borne diseases.

Destruction of property and disruption of transport are also experienced at such times.

And since the land is flat, the water takes much time to evaporate, before people can reclaim their land and rebuild their homes.

Ironically, life becomes even more unbearable during the sunny season, with the heat making life pathetic.

To the North and East, the region borders Nandi and Kericho counties respectively, which makes the areas bordering the two counties volatile to border rows.

Though a part of the region which falls under Muhoroni constituency is a great producer of sugar and rice, it remains in the dark.

It runs from the end of Kericho to the eastern end Kisumu Town.
