Residents of Ritumbe in Kionduso, Kisii County are yet to come to terms after a 32-year-old man married his brother's daughter.
Locals said the man Brian Moteba brought home the woman identified as Janet Gechemba to his home on Wednesday and introduced her as his wife only to be told Gechemba was his elder brother's daughter.
"Moteba has never married before. He arrived home with Gechemba and introduced her to his ageing mother after which it emerged that Gechemba was his niece," said a neighbour Celestine Ondoro.
Ms. Ondoro said Gechemba's mother divorced with Moteba's brother 13 years ago.
"Moteba was young when Gechemba's mother separated with her husband (Moteba's elder brother) who died 2 years ago. Moteba has been secretly seducing Gechemba without knowing she was his niece," said Ondoro.
An elder Andrew Momanyi confirmed the incident saying such incidences are common.
"It is good the man's mother noticed Moteba was his wife's uncle. The marriage could be terrible since such marriages are not recognized as by the Gusii culture," said Momanyi.
A local administrator Paul Ongiri said Gechemba was sent away by the man's family members since is an abomination for an uncle to marry her niece.
