Garissa and Mandera are among counties affected after the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) cancelled the results of 3,427 candidates.

Knec Chairperson Professor George Magoha made the announcement on Tuesday in Nairobi, cancelling the results of candidates who sat the 2018 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.

The exams of the candidates had been withheld to allow investigations into suspected exam malpractice.

The results from three schools, Mnara boys, Al Azar and Iqra secondary schools, in Garissa sub-county had been withheld pending investigations into allegations of irregularities.

Mr Magoha said other counties affected include Machakos, Meru, Isiolo, Kisii, Homa Bay, Turkana, Kericho, Narok, Bungoma, Kisumu, West Pokot, Elgeyo Marakwet and Migori.

He said investigations revealed that the 3,427 candidates were involved in examination irregularities during last year’s examinations.

Mr Magoha said some of the irregularities noted during investigations include identical errors in calculations, correct responses after incorrect working, identical wording often with unusual identical grammar or vocabulary, and numerous identical corrections by a group of candidates.

“There was sufficient evidence that 3,427 candidates in 44 centres were involved in examination irregularities in the 2018 KCSE examinations.”

“During investigations, it was discovered that there was collusion among the affected candidates’ answer scripts including identical errors in calculations, identical words, phrases, sentences and punctuation,” said Prof Magoha.

The Prof however said 1,275 candidates at nine centres were cleared from allegations of exam cheating and the candidates will receive their KCSE results.
