For the better part of Tuesday, Governor John Nyagarama faced online wrath from a section of rattled locals after he visited one of top performing schools in the county.
At Alimo Academy, Nyagarama bought soda and bread for candidates who emerged victorious, further promising to buy them suitcases once they report to secondary schools.
"I am pleased with the performance. It's one of the best in the county. I will buy those who performed well bags when they join secondary schools."
Besides Alimo Academy whose top student had 430 marks, Eronge Adventist Academy led throughout the county with virtually all candidates scoring above 400 marks.
Despite the good gesture from the governor, a section of locals accused him of 'misplaced' priorities.
"That a whole governor buys students soda and bread, something they eat daily! Why not even offer to pay school fees? This is the mistake we made in Nyamira," said Wicky Misati.
Mwalimu Nyerere, another fierce critic added: "It's funny that when other governors are talking about scholarships, someone is telling us about soda and bread. Just unfocused fellow."
Schools from Kisii and Nyamira Counties topped across the country with Imperial Academy, owned by former Nyamira gubernatorial candidate Charles Mochama, emerging fifth best countrywide.
The county government of Nyamira seats Sh120 million annually for bursaries to students from needy background.
