The elevation of Dr Fred Matiang'i by President Uhuru Kenyatta may have not come by sheer luck if his track record is anything to go by.
President Uhuru Kenyatta picked Matiang'i as Chairman of powerful National Development Implementation and Communication Cabinet Committee, raising questions about the roles of Deputy President William Ruto.
A staunch Christian who spent most of his early life in Borabu, Nyamira, Matiang'i's life has been all about perfection and getting desirable results based on the ministries he has served.
"I can't compromise on quality and standards. The work has to be done and it must be smart," he once said in a press conference.
A state official, who spoke in confidence, says Dr Matiang'i does not take poke and at times, he calls for meetings as early as 5am in the morning at his office.
"He doesn't take poke at all even his family. He calls meetings at 5am and those involved must attend. His day starts quite early, I think he's always the first to be in office," said the official.
Before joining cabinet in 2013, Matiang'i worked in parliament as a researcher and often lectured the University of Nairobi, school of comparative literature.
After his shirt stint at ICT ministry, Matiang'i moved to education where he banned KNEC over exam irregularities. There were claims that he's intending to succeed Governor John Nyagarama in Nyamira.
