President Kenyatta said legally, a position cannot be created for the former Prime Minister as the constitution does not allow.

Following the handshake between the two leaders, a section of leaders especially from the opposition have been calling for a change of the constitution to create a position for Mr Odinga.

Speaking during an interview with BBC's Zainab Badawi, the President said that he will work with Mr Odinga in terms of the country’s development.

“Why should we create any new position? We work in the purview of the Constitution. But we can partner with Raila in terms of development.”

“Handshake had nothing to do with ethnic communities…it basically denoted what we us leaders are saying that regardless of our ethnic backgrounds and political differences we will work together to ensure that going forward, political differences will not result in ethnic and religious animosity,” said the President.

President Kenyatta and his rival National Super Alliance (NASA) leader Mr Odinga had agreed to work together after a lengthy meeting that resulted in an agreement on pertinent issues that needed to be addressed.
