The Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) proposal to scrap off some allowance of public servants has continued to elicit mixed reactions from various quarters.
President Uhuru Kenyatta has said that he is backing the cut as the government seeks to streamline salaries and service delivery. While addressing different stakeholders at State House on Saturday, Uhuru welcomed the move, arguing that it is inevitable.
He also said that the reduction is part of the ways the government can embrace good governance.
The commission wants to examine up to 149 different allowance offered to civil servants following the new proposal. The meeting was attended by different stakeholders including senior civil servants, diplomats and African Union’s public policy assessors
“I want to make it clear, I fully support the guidelines issued by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) on salary scales for the Public and State Officers,” he said in part as quoted by Daily Nation.
Uhuru said that the public wage bill has been unsustainable and the government has been looking for ways to cut on the same. The reduction of the allowance is likely not to augur well with workers.
Over years, the workers have been lamenting over poor allowances in different sectors of the economy and this will be a big blow to them.
