The first thing that comes into one’s mind when you mention terror attacks in Kenya is al-Shabaab. The militia group has made many Kenyans live in fear.
Besides al-Shabaab, there are many militia groups that once caused bloodshed in the nation including Al-Qaeda, which was under the leadership of the late Osama Bin Laden.

1. 1998 US Embassy bombing
Kenyans were left in shock following the announcement about the bombing of the US Embassy on August 7, 1998. The incident left 213 people dead while more than 4000 Kenyans sustained major and minor injuries.
Another blast at the US Embassy in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania claimed the lives of 11 people.
2. Garissa University College massacre
A visit to this university will tell exactly how it felt when terrorist descended there. The attack left 147 students dead.
It has been marked as one of the deadliest attacks in the history of this nation. The incident saw a number of students relocating to other institutions because they feared for their lives.
The institution has since picked up after the government tightened up security in the region.
3. Westgate Mall attack
It is alleged that the terror attack was planned by four militiamen. At least 67 persons were left dead following the incident. The terrorists killed people from all walks of life including children.
It was one of the toughest moments for the nation.
4. The Mpeketoni attack
On Sunday, June 15, 2014 the nation woke up to the sad news of terrorists attacking Mpeketoni village in Lamu County.
The death toll of the attack was 50. Many other people sustained injuries following the attack. Residents have remained in fear in this part of the country because al-Shabaab fighters still manage to infiltrate Lamu due to its proximity to Lamu forest.
5. Mandera 2014 quarry attack
The Somali-based militants al-Shabaab also claimed responsibility of the Mandera attack that left 36 men and women working in the quarry dead. The attack was reportedly said to be targeting Christians.
