Engineers are ranked among the best-paid professionals in the nation. However, the journey to the top might be a rough one, as is the case to Casper Chebii, an engineering student.
Chebii, a third year Civil Engineering student at the Rift Valley Institute of Science and Technology (RVIST) has been forced to look elsewhere to fend for himself.
Consequently, the 23-year-old has found the remedy for his financial constraints in eggs which he sells by the roadside in Nakuru’s Olive Inn Estate bus stop.
The student who also sells sausages and smokies notes that financial hardships and idleness pushed him into venturing into the hustle in 2017, and is so far doing great.
“I needed something to do during the long holidays for I hate being idle. I started this business from the Sh10,000 I had saved. I have no regrets since I make Sh10,000 to Sh15,000 a month,” said Chebii as quoted by the Nation.
The young man who is on attachment at the Ministry of Public Works is a native of the neighbouring Baringo County and is the second-born in a family of eight.
Time being of the essence, he has since recruited his sister into the job. He notes that he wakes up at 4:30 am to prepare the merchandise and leaves the job to the sister, before taking over when he returns at 5:30 in the evening.
He notes that the job also has its challenges, especially on days of low sales.
“It is not that easy. Sometimes the sales go down. I could end up throwing away most of the food. The place is almost in the midst of bars and some drunkards refuse to pay after eating. Remaining positive, confident and persistent pays,“ he adds.
