The law enforcers recovered a pistol from the suspects in the afternoon operation, after they were ambushed at a bush near Ukweli Pastoral Center which doubles up as their hideout.

The suspects were reportedly drinking alcohol during the ambush, according to Kisumu County Administration Police Commandant Joseph Kigen.

He added that they are part of the larger gang using motorbikes to terrorize residents, adding that they had earlier conducted a successful robbery along the Kisumu-Kakamega Road.

Reports on Citizen Digital indicate that the team had earlier in the day robbed a lorry transporting gas cylinders, and also stole Sh40,000.

This comes barely three days after Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet claimed that criminal cases are on the decline in the county, ranking it among the safest in the Nyanza region.

The police chief who met the county Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o in Kisumu on Friday noted that only nine criminal cases have been recorded in the county over the last several weeks.

But on Saturday, during the Mashujaa Day celebrations in  the county, area County Commissioner Pauline Dola announced increased patrols to curb the increasing criminal cases in the region.
