A group of governors from the Mt. Kenya region have come out to openly speak about the 2022 presidential ambitions of Deputy President William Ruto.
Ruto is widely expected to vie for the top seat on a Jubilee ticket though there have been fears that the Mt. Kenya region might abandon him following the famous handshake between President Uhuru Kenyatta and opposition chief Raila Odinga.
But speaking at Kuinet farm, Soy constituency in Uasin Gishu County on Tuesday during the burial of Salina Lelei, mother to Uasin Gishu governor Jackson Mandago, three governors from the Mt. Kenya assured that the region will support DP Ruto’s bid.
Led by Kiambu governor Ferdinand Waititu, the county bosses insisted that the handshake has nothing to do with the 2022 elections.
“I was there when the President and his deputy sat down and agreed to work together. We as leaders, we are just waiting for the day when the agreement will be implemented,” said Waititu.
“Kikuyus and Kalenjins began their journey in 2013 and the journey is still on course,” added Nyeri governor Mutahi Kahiga.
Similar sentiments were shared by Tharaka Nithi governor Muthomi Njuki who noted that the debate now is on who will be DP Ruto’s running mate.
Njuki, however, insisted that Ruto’s deputy must be from the central region.
“The politics now in Mt. Kenya is about number two in 2022 and that is perhaps what many are mistaking us. We believe if number one is from Rift Valley, then number two must be from the other region (central),” he said.
